...was fantastic, cute, frequently cheezy, romantic, Japanese, and touching. Taken all at once, that's a little much for one movie, but I think I'll live. Great story, great voices for the characters, great time had by Bob.
Posted by nickles at July 23, 2005 10:47 AM | TrackBackIt seemed a bit disjointed; the story wasn't always coherent, but I couldn't figure out whether that was a bad thing, because Miyazaki seemed to know what he was doing (I read the book this was based on and the confusing parts in the movie were things Miyazaki brought in). It was kind of George MacDonald-esque, I thought.

Linnea: it WAS a little disjointed and MacDonald-esque. Good word. I think I liked it because it was a nice blend of mythic and ordinary. Maybe that's why it was disjointed? It certainly wasn't the best, but it was worth the price of the ticket -- not many movies are, these days.

Posted by: mez at July 27, 2005 01:24 AMI take it back. A year later, I've just rewatched that movie and I love it. It doesn't seem disjointed, anymore. The only reason it did, I think, was because the story was about two people. I'm used to only one protagonist, but here we've got Howl and Sophie trading the protagonist label throughout the movie. He's mythic. She's banal. But they're both heroes.
