sounds like home

I listened to Patty Griffin this morning on the train. Ahhh.

I told SJ in an email that I feel like the most important thing for me to do to get all set-up in my new apartment is to make a cd of comfort music. OBVIOUSLY, getting gas and electricity online is more pressing, but it sure doesn't feel like that. It feels like I need something that ties this new place to the other places I've lived, to my past.

Some good tunes could help. Music is funny like that.

Music can also hinder you in foreign lands. Like hearing Michael Bolton and Britney Spears back to back in a restaurant in China.

Yeah. But that's a hindrance anywhere, whether you're in a foreign land or not. It's all about digestion.

aahhhhhhhhhhhhh Bob, I agree in the most massive way. I have never set up home in a foreign land but I have traveled with a little comfort music, and without, and I can say the difference is profound.
A little sweetness of familiarity in music pulled me into peace on an almost nightly basis while in Egypt this spring. No, it's not good to try to distract yourself from the foreignness of your surroundings, or hide from it. But hearing a song I know and love in a brand new context can be a blessing indescribable.
